SECONDARY SCHOOL YOUTH WORK

Young Life is committed to serving at local colleges assisting in fulfilling their goals and values by providing youth workers in areas where caring adults are needed.
In-schools youth workers are involved in many aspects of school life; working alongside staff and walking with students. Our youth workers are involved in areas such as sports coaching, special interest group mentoring, peer support programmes, lunch time events and personal life coaching. They attend year 9 camps to welcome the new students into the school community. Young Life youth workers are currently involved with Botany Downs Secondary College, Edgewater College, and Pakuranga College.
Youth workers work under the oversight of the school counsellors to provide safe caring adults who are there to listen and mentor students in a variety of ways. Youth workers are present every week and regularly present during lunch and interval times to welcome students and help them to succeed. Each youth worker works an average of 10 hours per week directly with youth during school hours. Over time students find trust and consistency in our youth workers: two vital elements of an adult mentor.
All youth workers complete a Level 3 Youth Work National Certificate within their first year as well as training in the Treaty of Waitangi and Code of Ethics. The focus is on being preventative and working in a strengths based way with young people, to help them achieve their goals and to become healthy resilient young adults.
