In 2012, Kate Erikson became a part-time paid 24/7 youth worker at Pakuranga College.
Kate grew up in the greater Howick area and has been a volunteer youth leader at Howick Presbyterian Church for the last twelve years. During this time she also worked towards her PhD in reproductive biology, which was submitted for official examination in February of this year. While Kate enjoyed the challenge of her doctoral studies, she discovered that youth development was her primary interest. Kate feels most herself when out in nature. Her favourite activities include: tramping, horse riding, running, cycling and a good sing‑a‑long around a campfire.
Favourite movie
Very difficult to answer! Probably The Notebook, but a good action movie always goes down well.
Favourite food
Most Thai dishes, but a good plate of spicy potato wedges with sour cream is almost impossible to turn down!
What do you love about being a youth worker?
I love seeing young people discover who they are and what their full potential is. I see it as a privilege to support young people through this process.
What was my reason for getting into school based youth work?
School-based youth work brings me into contact with a number of young people I would not normally meet outside of that environment. In this way I have greater opportunity to give back to a community that supported me when I was a young person.
What is the greatest piece of advice I would give to young people?
Sorry I have three things! Firstly, treat others as they wish to be treated. Secondly, to surround themselves with people who accept them for who they are and genuinely care for them. Thirdly, that they are unique and to sparkle like no one else can.
